This week, it celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its brief fling with fame, which seems a good time to give it another listen. Randomly heard on the radio in amongst early s rock as it often is , you might be left a little confused. The computer pips in the middle section are, of course, the finest moment of the song. The Shape of Love is somewhere just above the left knee. The song is actually largely acoustic and fairly simple, with the grimy electronics just creating background atmosphere. And ultimately what more can anyone ask for? You are commenting using your WordPress.
Your Woman (White Town)
The biggest hit ever recorded by a Derby artist could be about to return to the charts – more than eight years after the original hit number one. The quirky single was recorded on a tiny budget by Jyoti and went straight to number one in January on the back of big support from Radio 1 indie champions Mark Radcliffe and Marc ‘Lard’ Riley. Its main hook was a sample of a track called ‘My Woman’ by Lew Stone and the Monseigneur Band – something Tyler has retained in his version.
The video for the original was shot around Derby city centre and featured the large stone ram on East Street. Tyler’s video is filmed in Lincoln.
Your Woman by White Town song meaning, lyric interpretation, video and chart No other UK #1 single has such a time gap before reaching the summit.
Its electro-funk groove and cryptic lyrics are enough to satisfy both dancers and thinkers alike, while its infectious hook — a trumpet line sampled from a record by crooner Al Bowlly — is the sort of thing that worms its way into your head and stays there for days on end. White Town formed in as a conventional guitar band but quickly shed members over the following year. By the end of , they were down to just one member — singer, keyboardist, and founder Jyoti Mishra.
EP, released by the relatively unknown indie label Parasol in , could have easily have drifted into obscurity. Mishra made it entirely on his own with a zero budget — he used a cheap sampler bought with money borrowed from his girlfriend, and he sequenced it on a program given away for free on the cover of a magazine. From there it blew up, hitting 1 at the end of January It was one of, if not the first bedroom-produced pop song to claim the honour.
Mishra looks back on his short-lived fame as a bizarre blip in his career.

Who would have guessed that an Al Bowlly song called My Woman from would eventually end up on a number one hit. A total of 64 years elapsed from first being recorded and White Town using it as a sample on his number one making it the longest gap in history. He began playing the keyboard when he was 12 and learned to play guitar soon after. He and a group of friends formed White Town in but one by one his friends moved on and Jyoti was left as a one-man band. Jyoti spent a lot of time experimenting with music in his bedroom using a sequencer and various samples.
Bowlly was such an extravagant person that he once sent his clothes to the pawnshop to raise money for his hotel bill.
More than eight years after Jyoti Mishra put Derby on the pop map with his number one hit ‘Your Woman’, the single could be about to make its.
Does the name White Town — or even Jyoti Mishra — ring a bell? Probably not, right? Yet they both belong to the man responsible for one of the biggest hits of the 90s — ‘Your Woman’. Older generations will remember for topping the UK Singles Chart in , while it’s impossible for the younger of us not to feel a flutter of displaced nostalgia at the sound of Lew Stone’s trumpet.
Its creator on the other hand never enjoyed the same fame. So how does the one-man-band feel about creating a one hit wonder?
Four weeks later, it entered the UK charts at Number One. Without any promotion, his song “Your Woman” – a catchy ’80s-sounding slice of technopop – was picked up by BBC Radio 1 and put into heavy rotation. White Town’s success has brought backroom production values center stage and left music pundits vacillating between declaring him a hero for lo-fi computer geeks and dismissing him as a one-hit wonder.
He has since released the album Women in Technology , made a splash in the US, and left the big labels wondering how long they can hold out before cheap technology and the distributive power of the Net take over their turf. Wired: Following the success of your single, the media have been quick to portray you as a stereotypical computer geek.
White Town is a British musical act and is a solo project of Jyoti Prakash Mishra. His song “Your Woman” reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in.
Welcome to Forgotten Videos. For some, these videos are forgotten, for others just filed away, and for others still, a totally brand-new discovery. Whichever category you fall into, each week we’ll feature a video that’s possibly been collecting dust when what it really deserves is a fresh look. Or vice-versa….
We’re not here to judge, we just want to take you on a little trip down memory lane. Yep, you’ll remember when hair was really that big, when drums were that up front in the mix, when video was young er and so were you. However, if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that the song was actually inspired in part by Mishra’s teenage infatuation with a lesbian friend.
But there is still much left to be interpreted by the song, and the video. Produced in a black-and-white silent film style, the video features recurring shots of crossroad signs bearing choices that are often presented in romantic relationships — seduction vs. But who will end up at the finish line in the race to find love?

Still, there are hierarchies in this cheerful froth of just-unleashed opinion — top level domains rarely bump uglies. The former talks about Mercury Rev, Pavement, and Spiritualized, but seems increasingly fond of chart pop, a tendency I do my best to foster once it becomes my late-night home. The latter has divergent interests: I glance at it now and then but the closest it gets to the fields I know is Stereolab.
It is almost my kind of place: I keep it as a subscribed group on my newsreader but let the messages pile up unwanted. UKMA was one answer to a difficult question: what happens to British independent music after Britpop? The music press were struggling with it. Britpop had finally given NME bands, Select Bands, Evening Session bands some proper stardom, but this meant the waves coming through were groups who wanted to be rock stars, and sounded like it too.
As American alternative music had discovered a few years before, success can be toxic. A reaction against Britpop was natural — raggedy, difficult, geeky bands with proud local followings and an ambivalence about fame on any terms but theirs.
Quite an achievement considering that this was, way before the full impact of the social media revolution. Mishra did not appear in the video or on the cover of the record and remained steadfastly out of the limelight for the majority of his 15 minutes of fame. I was working in Derby at the time and there were plenty of apocryphal tales of Asian blokes hitting the clubs and passing themselves off as Jyoti in the hope of gaining access to the VIP area. Mishra never really troubled the charts again, but has continued to make music and was advertising a new single on his website as recently as March Looking forward to hearing from you.
